After the solid results of call blocking extensions on iOS 10 (my annoyance with spam calls has grown substantially smaller, and I’m not alone), I’ve had a good experience with the Identity Lookup extensions I’ve tested on iOS 11 too. One of them, MessageFilter, lets me create whitelist and blacklist rules for keywords or phone numbers that match the sender or content of an incoming SMS; another one, SMS Shield, uses machine learning (via Core ML) to automatically determine potential spam messages and filter them. Thanks to SMS filtering extensions, I haven’t seen spam messages from my local supermarket (or other stores that unfortunately have my phone number) in months because they’ve been automatically hidden. Although spam SMS messages are less of a nuisance than spam calls, Identity Lookup is a welcome addition to Messages. Finally, Apple has brought two new full-screen effects to iMessage. While I was somewhat skeptical of effects last year, I’ve kept using them as an over-the-top, sometimes sarcastic way to express my feelings with close friends.

When you click this you can change most of the pertinent settings relating to your computer, from your background wallpaper, to power management settings. This is analogous to the Control Panel in Microsoft Windows, or System Preferences for a Mac. Much of the items on the settings dialogue should be fairly self explanatory, so for the interests of brevity I’ll explain the more in-depth items only. The look and feel of the settings dialogue differs between distributions (and versions), however most of the actions available perform the same functions. Notifications are the pop-up messages that appear at the top of the screen when a particular App wants to make you aware of something. Just in the way that your mobile phone shows you an alert when someone sends you a message, for example. When apps are installed, they automatically get added to this list (if they are apps that use notifications). You can choose to disable notifications on an app-by-app basis, or switch off notifications entirely (Notification Banners - toggle to OFF).

Video conferencing can help by allowing you to talk face-to-face, even if it is via a screen. Fortunately, there are plenty of free video conferencing apps you can use to connect. Supports: Up to 10 participants for an unlimited duration. If you have a Google account, you have access to Google Hangouts. For free Gmail and G Suite Basic customers, Google Hangouts allows for up to 10 people to chat in a video call. The service also supports simultaneous voice chat and allows participants to join a conference via email or a shareable link. In response to the coronavirus crisis, Google has relaxed some restrictions for all G Suite and G Suite for Education customers, regardless of tier. Other Enterprise-level features that are available to all G Suite customers include the ability to stream video to up to 100,000 viewers within a domain, and the ability to record and save meetings directly to Google Drive.
